The Land
Château Gloria is located in Saint-Julien, a small appellation in Bordeaux known for its high concentration of classified growths. While not a classified growth itself, the estate was built piece by piece by Henri Martin, through the purchase of parcels, many of which were classified as "grands crus" in the 1855 classification. The soils in Saint-Julien are primarily Günzian gravel, which contributes to the unique character of the wines. This terroir, with a focus on the vineyard, is what gives the wines their remarkable quality.
The Wine
The 2020 Chateau Gloria is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot. It is crafted with a focus on tradition and care. The wine is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and then aged for 14 months in oak barrels, with 40% new oak being used on average. This wine aims for a balance between elegance and power, and it shows notes of red berries and undergrowth as well as high-quality tannins. This is a clear expression of a classic Saint-Julien.
The People
Château Gloria is the life's work of Henri Martin, who painstakingly built the estate by acquiring parcels over time. The Domaines Henri Martin team, led by Rémi Di Costanzo, is composed of 45 individuals who work daily in the vineyards and cellars. Their focus is to bring out the best qualities in a naturally exceptional terroir, and they do this by taking a detailed approach with manual harvesting, optical sorting, and a mix of traditional and modern techniques. The family is committed to producing wines that show the elegance, strength and complexity of their terroir. They are also focused on the environment and have received HEV 3 and ISO 14001 certifications.
